Search Giant Google Could Enter Mobile Broadband

Google, the Mountain-View California based company, is a household name for its well- known search engine. As a strategy of its growth plan, the company has aggressively pushed for buy-outs, and it is quite famous for acquiring start-up companies with good business potential. Since 2001, it has added fifty-nine companies to its kitty and these companies have businesses in diverse areas like mobile software to video to VoIP.

Google is not only a search giant but also an ambitious company that is keen on diversifying and becoming a strong player in the mobile internet segment. As a part of this strategy, Google had acquired an advertising company named DoubleClick. The US regulator the FTC after a thorough investigation for about four months had finally approved the takeover.

As a sequel to this acquisition, the company has now announced its intention to acquire another such company called AdMob, which is a four-year-old company engaged in the same business as DoubleClick. The FTC has asked for more information in this context, and the earlier experience shows that this approval too will take time.

Along with consolidating its position in the mobile advertising market, Google is also looking towards acquiring small local businesses. In this context, it has identified Yelp as a company worth acquiring. Yelp is a local business reviews site and it perfectly fits in with Google’s business plan to increase its local presence.

The mobile market is now increasingly becoming location-specific in both application and advertising, and acquisition of Yelp will help Google to register its presence in a virgin territory.
